Winterim 2017: Morocco

January 2-16, 2017

Earn three credits of upper division art history in 10 days! The course begins with two days in Casablanca, then moves on to the imperial cities of Marrakesh, Fez, and Rabat. Students will study ceramic production, jewelry and metalsmithing, Arabic calligraphy, illumination and illustration, urbanism, and architecture. Site visits include the Bou Inania madrasa in Fez and an examination of zellij tile work, the Qubbat al-Barudiyyin in Marrakesh and a discussion of the intricacies and mathematical precision of muqarnas vaults, the Djemma al-Fna (A UNESCO Masterpiece of Oral and Intangible History), and the Museum of Contemporary Art in Rabat. We will wander medieval medinas and markets, as well as exploring the modern side of Morocco.

Estimate costs $4,650.00, includes: Airfare, hotels, meals, entrance fees, all inter-country transportation, cultural activities, and tuition.
